What Fabrics, Textures, or Patterns Say Spring to You?

If you dress in monotones or a very narrow color range, do you change things up seasonally? If so, what textures, patterns, fabrics, or more do you pull out when it’s springtime? As someone who wears a lot of black, I’ve joked that I have my “spring blacks” — so let’s discuss!

How to Dress in Monotones in Spring

To me, some of my “spring blacks” include things like

  • linen or gauzy fabrics
  • sheer fabrics or details
  • dots – clip dots, Swiss dots, (confetti dots was a new one but readers were mentioning it last week!),
  • white and ivory details, like a white shirt collar peeking out of a sweater or white sneakers instead of black boots — or black and white patterns
  • lace can be iffy because so much of it has a “holiday” look to it, but I think less traditional laces can be good for spring…
  • I don’t know why, but details like puffed sleeves feel springy, too

Meanwhile, I’ll put away things in heavier fabrics; most of my sweaters that don’t have an element of cotton, silk, or linen are washed and set aside until the fall. For some reason cableknit sweaters feel more “fall,” but wider knits like fisherman knits seem fine for spring… Anything velvet or with velvet details should go away by March.

For example, some “springy black tops” from Nordstrom at the moment — including a slightly sheer blouse with tulip sleeves, a “raglan sleeve” with a wide lace (this one comes in plus sizes and in white, and then there are solid colors without the lace detail in bright colors), a linen sweater, and a black blouse with eyelets. Another thing I do do in spring: switch my darker denim out for lighter blues, grays, and whites for spring.

In more recent years I’ve been trying to grow my collection of navy, as that feels even more springy than black — but I find navy kind of hard to do for dressing in monotones because there are so many different shades of navy.

Readers, how about you — do you wear a lot of the same color? If you wear lighter colors like beiges and whites, how do you switch it up for fall vs. spring?
