St. Mary’s coach Newhall, Arlington’s Cummings win 400th – Boston Herald
In nonleague girls basketball play, Bella Owumi netted 18 points, Reese Matela put in 17 and Juliana Conte added 15 points as St. Mary’s of Lynn (6-1) topped Mansfield 69-42 to earn Jeff Newhall his 400th career victory.
Boys basketball
Kobe Nguyen put in 19 points while Ace Burris and Aidan McGrath had 12 points apiece as North Quincy (4-1) rolled to a 55-37 nonleague victory over Milton. … Trever Mullarkey hit a triple with 20 seconds left to go up one then he got a steal to secure the win as Whittier edged Amesbury, 64-61. … Manny Duran scored 21 points as Xaverian defeated King Philip, 65-50. … Gabe McIntyre poured in 14 points as Mansfield defeated Bridgewater-Raynham, 63-49.
Boys hockey
In nonleague action, Will Saratella scored twice, including the game-winner, as Needham won 5-2 over Andover. .. Caiden Brady, Nick Romanos and Chris McCarthy each had a tally as WInchester (5-1) blanked Malden Catholic 3-0.
In the Patriot League, Cam McKenna had two goals as Hingham routed Marshfield, 6-0. … Nick Beltramini, Jack O’Hearn and Luke Tracey scored as Whitman-Hanson (3-1-1) knocked off Duxbury, 3-1.
Girls hockey
Julianna Taylor posted 25 saves for HPNA as it edged out a 2-1 nonleague win over Woburn. … Hailey Graybeal tied the program record in shutouts, posting 57 saves alongside Kara Gambale’s goal and assist to lead Billerica/Chelmsford (6-0) past Reading 2-0.
Wrestling
Arlington swept a quad-meet, giving Kevin Cummings 400 career wins. The Spy Ponders defeated Beverly (44-33), Haverhill (40-36), Melrose (41-36) and North Andover (53-27).
Former St. John’s Prep star Tyler Knox of Stanford earned the prestigious Dan Gable Outstanding Wrestler Award after winning the 133-pound title at the 60th annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships. The redshirt freshmen went 5-0 in the event (14-2 on the season), including a 10-3 win over reigning All-American Dylan Shawver in the finals.
Knox was one of the three individual champions as the Cardinal won the team title at the event for the first time in school history.
Football
Former Medway and Milton Academy All-Scholastic running back Matt Childs of Brown was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Year. Childs led the Bears in rushing for 361 yards and two touchdowns on 91 carries, while catching 29 passes for 284 yards and two scores. One of those two TD receptions was a 75-yarder against Harvard on Sept. 28.
