FBI declares New Orleans incident an act of terrorism
Ten people were killed and more than 30 injured after a truck drove into a crowd of New Year’s revelers on Bourbon Street in New Orleans. The incident has been declared an act of terrorism by the FBI, according to CNN.
The incident occurred around 3:15 a.m. on Wednesday when the truck drove onto the famed tourist street, intentionally striking people celebrating the arrival of 2025. The male driver then shot at police officers, injuring two, before he was killed by officers returning fire.
CNN reports that the FBI and Homeland Security are also investigating an explosive device that was found at the scene.
The Sugar Bowl College Football Playoff quarterfinal between Notre Dame and the University of Georgia will still be played as scheduled tonight at 8:45 p.m. at the Superdome.
At this time, it is unknown if anyone from metro Atlanta or Georgia is among those killed or injured in the terrorist attack.
The Atlanta Police Department said in a social media post that it would add personnel for today’s Peach Bowl game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
We acknowledge the concerns raised following the events earlier this morning in New Orleans, LA. In advance of the Peach Bowl, the Atlanta Police Department had already implemented increased security measures, including the deployment of additional officers. In light of today’s development and as an added precaution, specialized units and additional personnel will be further deployed to the Downtown and Midtown areas to ensure the continued safety and security of residents and visitors.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the City of New Orleans and the NOPD.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
