DECATUR — The building at 2330 Mount Zion Road in Decatur has had a long history of tenants. First, it was a Wendy’s, then a Hickory River Smokehouse, and soon, it will become the newest Dunkin’ location.
The Hickory River restaurant closed late last year due to the building owners not renewing their lease with the company. The barbecue restaurant is currently exploring other locations to reopen in Decatur.
Local Dunkin’ owners, Krishna and Sim Patel, confirmed the opening to Heartland Newsfeed. The brothers operate the current Dunkin’ location in the Brettwood Village Shopping Center on Water Street, which opened in the summer of 2015.
“We own the existing restaurant in Decatur and are excited about opening another location,” Patel said.
The Patels anticipate the opening date for the new location will be sometime in fall 2025.
The new location will mark the second Dunkin’ location in Decatur and the third coffee shop along Mount Zion Road.
In late 2023, a 7 Brew Coffee location opened in the shopping center that houses Rural King in late 2023. A Starbucks opened next door to 7 Brew in March 2024, with another location located nearby inside the Kroger store at Airport Plaza.
The announcement comes as Dunkin’ is expanding even more across Central Illinois. In late 2024, a Dunkin’ location opened near the Cross County Mall in Mattoon.
A request for information from Dunkin’ Corporation was unable to confirm whether any additional locations in Central Illinois besides the upcoming Decatur store were opening soon.
As of publication, Dunkin’ currently has 9,700 locations across the United States, with Illinois having over 700 locations. New York state currently has the most store locations with over 1,400, amounting to about 15% of all U.S.-based Dunkin’ locations.
In addition to the U.S., Dunkin’ operates stores in over 40 countries around the world. The Dunkin’ brand is currently owned by Inspire Brands, which owns iconic brands such as Jimmy John’s, Buffalo Wild Wings, and Arby’s.
