Here’s the thing: electric and magnetic fields (EMFs) are literally everywhere. Both occurring naturally through Earth’s magnetic field and from man-made sources and some of us are a bit concerned. Do we really know enough about them to consider them 100% safe for us to be interacting with as much as we do? Some scientists don’t think so…
And we’re not so sure, either. We’re taking notes from radiation protection guru Kourtney Kardashian Barker, who famously does not use microwaves for this exact reason.
We’re all about finding ways to help you detoxify your routines, whether that be teaching you how to protect yourself from the sun, recommending non-toxic products, or (better yet) creating our own non-toxic products.
But, chemicals aren’t the only thing that can mess with your hormones or other body systems. Electromagnetic fields and extremely low frequencies (ELF) may be affecting you as well.
So, we’re here to do what we always do: keep you informed and protected. That’s why today’s post is a guide on how to stay protected from EMF like a pro (AKA Kourtney Kardashian Barker).
How to Protect Yourself from EMF like Kourtney Kardashian
First, let’s dive deeper into what EMF radiation actually is. After all, it’s easier to protect and detox when you know what you’re up against.
What Is EMF Radiation?
So, we know electric and magnetic fields together are referred to as electromagnetic fields, or EMFs. But, what exactly is an electric or magnetic field? And what does either have to do with potentially harmful radiation?
Electric and magnetic fields are created by electric currents. These invisible areas of this energy, AKA radiation, can be made up of electric energy or a combination of electric and magnetic energy. Electric fields are actually present whether or not a device is turned on, while magnetic fields need a current to be present.
The electromagnetic spectrum ranges from extremely low frequency EMFs (ELF-EMFs) to high-frequency EMFs.
We come into contact with high-frequency EMFs when we get things like X-rays. Generally, there are already protections in place when you’re near high-frequency EMFs like when they put that lead vest on you at the dentist’s office during an X-ray because we already know high-frequency EMFs can do direct damage to DNA and our cells.
We know less about the effects of ELF-EMFs and mid-frequency EMFs. These electromagnetic fields include microwaves, radio waves from your phone or radio, infrared radiation, and fields from power lines and electrical appliances. So basically, we’re in contact with them all the time.
We don’t know about you, but if we’re going to be in contact with something 100% of the time, we’re going to want to know the effect it has on our bodies, so let’s get into it.
What Are The Effects of EMF Exposure?
The effects of EMF exposure vary depending on the intensity and duration of the exposure. Like we mentioned, higher-frequency EMFs (such as the ones produced by radiological imaging) can directly damage DNA and cells. These cells may then be repaired, but they may also die or become cancerous.
As for ELF-EMFs and mid-frequency EMFs, the effects are a lot less clear. The World Health Organization created the International EMF Project in 1996 to look at EMF exposure in the range of 0 to 300 GHz; but there are still gaps in the research.
Currently, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified radiofrequency EMFs (RF-EMFs) and ELF-EMFs as potentially carcinogenic, meaning they could contribute to the development of cancer. Studies have also suggested a link between RF-EMFs and oxidative stress.
Oxidative stress occurs when the ratio of unstable molecules (called free radicals) to antioxidants is too high. When there are too many free radicals of antioxidants to neutralize, cell and tissue damage can occur. Additionally, this study reviewed multiple studies that reported a relationship between electric power lines and childhood leukemia.
Bastyr University published this article in 2021 that suggests the “Zoom fatigue” that many people experienced during the pandemic was actually electromagnetic hypersensitivity AKA a reaction to the increased EMF in our homes.
This study noted headaches, fatigue, eye/vision problems, tinnitus, dizziness, memory and focus issues, depression, and even suicidal ideation to be symptoms of electromagnetic hypersensitivity. When participants moved away from their high-emitting EMF devices (their WiFi router, in this case), the symptoms got better.
With such intense potential effects, we want to make sure we’re doing what we can to protect ourselves and our kids from damage and carcinogens. Let’s talk about HOW.
How to Protect Yourself from EMF Exposure like Kourtney Kardashian
Kourtney Kardashian protects herself and her family by limiting WiFi use and ditching her microwave, but there are TONS more ways to protect yourself from EMF exposure.
Here are some tips:
+ Limit use by reading hard copies of books rather than e-reading (here’s 7 books successful people read to get you started). Or at least turn your e-reader on airplane mode.
+ Be aware of your high-emitting RF devices: WiFi routers, extenders, cordless phone stations, etc.
+ Turn off and unplug devices when not in use.
+ Use hands-free methods of listening to podcasts or talking on the phone.
+ Turn off WiFi and Bluetooth settings when not in use.
+ Reduce the power output on the WiFi router. It doesn’t need to be at maximum output most of the time.
+ Use wired keyboards, mouses, and headphones, rather than Bluetooth versions.
+ As Lauryn says, “Keep your phone off [your] future kids!” AKA don’t sit with your cell phone in your lap or pocket.
+ Use EMF-shielding devices.
+ Move away from sources of EMF when possible.
+ Detox from EMF.
+ Keep all electronics out of the bedroom at night or at least on airplane mode.
How To Detox From EMF Exposure
The goal when detoxing from EMF exposure is to reduce oxidative stress and help the body get rid of carcinogens. There are a lot of TSC-approved ways to do this.

Take a break from social media.
The easiest way for most of us to decrease our screentime (and therefore RF-EMF radiation) is to do a little digital detox when it comes to social media. While you’re on your social media cleanse, take advantage of the many benefits of connecting with nature. You’ll be glad you did.
Wrap yourself up in a detox wrap.
