Depending on who you are, you either fear or welcome the question, “What do you want for Christmas?” If you’re the former, we get it.

As an adult woman, it can be really hard to know what to ask for, whether it’s because you’re a mom used to taking care of everyone else or you grab things when you need or want them on your own. Or you just draw a blank anytime someone asks you for gift ideas.

Beyond the difficulties of coming up with ideas . . . assembling your ideas into a gift list that’s actually functional isn’t the easiest thing to do. This is the BUSIEST time of year and there are so many ways to put together a list and share it with your loved ones.

And just because Christmas isn’t all about gifts doesn’t mean it’s not still a little about gifts, right?

So, to help all you ladies out, we’re giving you a guide to creating the perfect Christmas gift list for YOU. Yes, not for the kids, not for your S.O., not for your friends, not for your family . . . this one is for you. At the end of the post, we’ll also give you some gift ideas to add to your Christmas list.

How to Make a Christmas List for Yourself as a Grown Woman

Step 1: Think about what you need and what you want.

First of all, think about both what you need and what you want. It can be so easy for us to focus on the must-haves, but remember you deserve to treat yourself, too. Sure, ask for another set of wine glasses to replace the set broken at your last holiday cocktail party, but don’t leave out that cute card holder you’ve been eyeing.

Step 2: Dig into your wishlists on various websites.

If you already do a lot of online shopping (or a lot of browsing), you probably have a few ideas already hidden away on wishlists hosted on each of those sites. Take some time to dig back into those wishlists and favorites to figure out what you still want or need and add it to the list.

Step 3: Gather inspo from your favorite online stores.

When looking for new ideas, start with your favorite stores. Just get some inspiration by browsing sales, new releases, or bestsellers. If these are stores you go back to again and again, chances are you’re going to find something on their online shop that you wouldn’t mind getting for Christmas.

Step 4: Go window shopping.

Remember that in-person malls, stores, and boutiques still exist. Head out and do some window shopping. If you’re prone to buy things for yourself on the spot, try to resist the urge. Just take pictures of what you’d like, so you can add them to your list. Make sure to note the store where you found the product to make it super easy for your friends and family. This is a great way to support the small businesses in your local area.

Step 5: Ask your girlfriends for their favorite things.

Reach out to your friends and ask them for their must-have items in whatever category: What are their favorite staple fashion pieces? What kitchen gadget can they not live without? Is there any home decor that they’re totally in love with? Are there any beauty products changing the game for them right now? Ask them.

If you’re not into that turn to your influencers friends. Lauryn always has recommendations on LTK and ShopMy.

Step 6: Look for a variety of price ranges.

You never know what someone’s price range for gifts may be. Chances are, everyone is going to be different. So, look for a variety of price ranges to add to your list. If you have a lot of high-ticket items, try to add smaller, more affordable options, too.

If you have a lot of budget-friendly options, don’t be afraid to add pricier items to your list. There may be someone out there really wanting to treat you to something special.

Step 7: List everything out and consider making an online gift list.

Now, it’s time to list everything out. How you do this is up to you, but we recommend an online gift list. An online gift list allows your loved ones to easily find and order things on their phone or computer without the hassle of hunting down the product. You can choose a place like Target or Amazon, but if you want a gift list that allows you to add items from different retailers, use something like MyRegistry or even create an Excel sheet with hyperlinks.

Step 8: Make sure you add necessary details.

When you create your Christmas gift list, don’t forget to add the necessary details. If it’s clothes or certain household items, you’ll want to add sizing. If there are multiple color options for something, make sure to note which color you want. Of course, if using pen and paper or a spreadsheet, you’ll need to leave info about where and how to purchase the item, too.

Step 9: Refine and organize your list.

Once everything is inputted, organize that list. Do it in whatever way seems like it’ll be the most practical for your friends and family. You could organize by price, category, most-wanted to least-wanted, etc. No matter what you choose, the organization will be super appreciated by your loved ones.

Step 10: Communicate and share your list with others.

Finally, share your list. Most of the time it’s good etiquette to wait for someone to ask for your list before you send it. However, if you know someone is going to ask (like maybe your mom or your husband), just send it over. These lists are really helpful for anyone hoping to make your holiday special.
