How Does Al Mukadam Stay Grounded Amid His Growing Success in TV and Film?
Best known for his roles in The Way Home and the beloved Canadian series Radio Free Roscoe, actor Al Mukadam has built a strong reputation for his versatility and dedication to his craft. He has also made a name for himself as a film director.
Despite his success, the Canadian native remains grounded in his roots and early beginnings. With a career spanning both television and film, Al has captivated audiences with his dynamic performances and compelling storytelling. As his success continues to grow, he remains deeply connected to his roots, valuing the experiences and influences that shaped his journey. In this conversation, he reflects on his early days in the industry, his approach to fatherhood—both on and off-screen—and the lessons he’s learned along the way.
The actor shared this with Social Lifestyle Magazine:
Reflecting on how his journey began, he recalls: “I started when I was very young. A movie was shot near my school when I was in sixth grade—that was the first time I saw the organized chaos of a film or TV set. I was instantly curious about this world, and that curiosity led me to explore how I could break in. I was lucky enough to have a friend whose aunt was a talent agent. I auditioned for her agency and started booking gigs—commercials and voiceover work—before transitioning into TV and movies.”
When asked what inspired him to pursue acting, he fondly shares: “I loved movies and TV growing up, and I was always a big ham for my family and friends. Acting was something I naturally gravitated toward, and from a young age, I took it upon myself to figure out how to break into the industry. It’s still something I find incredibly fun.”
Discussing his role as a father to a young actress—played by Sadie Laflamme-Snow—in The Way Home, Mukadam reveals how his real-life experience as a dad to two young boys informs his performance. “To let go,” he says. “What inspired me—or rather, what I anticipate—is that young children eventually grow up (obviously) and have their own lives. Alice in The Way Home has grown up so much, and Brady has to reconcile that his little girl isn’t so little anymore. It’s something I’m already preparing myself for.”
Looking ahead to the rest of season three of The Way Home, Al hints at his character’s evolving journey. “It’s about learning—sometimes easily, sometimes with difficulty—how to let go: trusting his daughter and the process, and actually enjoying watching the young woman she’s becoming. Big proud papa moments.”
When offering advice to aspiring actors, Al keeps it simple yet profound: “Really ask yourself: What do you want? Then figure out how to go out and get it.”
He continually challenges himself, carefully selecting projects that push him both creatively and personally. “My goal is always to work on interesting and exciting projects that push me as an actor, help me learn about myself, and allow me to share that journey collaboratively.”
Proud of his Canadian roots, Mr. Mukadam emphasizes its influence on his life and career. “Home is where the heart is. It informs everything. I love Canada.” He also highlights the importance of embracing diverse backgrounds, sharing: “I was born and raised in Canada, but my heritage is Italian and South African. Regardless, representation is important. Let’s normalize mixing things up—variety is the spice of life.”
Beyond acting, Al appreciates the travel opportunities his career has provided. Reflecting on some of his favorite U.S. destinations, he says: “I love Jersey. A friend of mine used to live in Jersey City, and I visited often. I love a lot of states… I lived in California for years. New York, of course. Love Florida! And Chicago—windy but great food.”
Al Mukadam’s journey from a curious sixth grader to a respected actor and director is a testament to his perseverance, passion, and unwavering connection to his roots. As he continues to evolve in his career and his role as a father, he remains dedicated to exploring new creative challenges while embracing the lessons life has taught him. Al Mukadam’s commitment to growth, both professionally and personally, reflects his deep character. With a career that has already achieved so much, the future holds boundless potential for Al. His dedication to his craft and love for his family continue to shape and inspire the roles he chooses, both on-screen and off.
