Donald Trump blames FAA diversity policies for mid-air collision in Washington

US President Donald Trump blamed FAA’s diversity policies implemented during the Obama and Biden administrations for the midair collision over the Potomac River, despite the investigation being in its early stages.
The Republican also blamed the Army helicopter crew that collided with a passenger aircraft approaching Reagan National Airport.
Trump said “we are one family” as he expressed condolences for the crash. “The FAA is actively recruiting workers who suffer severe intellectual disabilities, psychiatric problems and other mental and physical conditions under a diversity and inclusion hiring initiative spelled out on the agency’s website,” Trump said.
He added that the program allowed for the hiring of people with hearing and vision issues as well as paralysis, epilepsy and “dwarfism.”
Trump said air traffic controllers needed to be geniuses. “They have to be talented, naturally talented geniuses. You can’t have regular people doing their job,” he said.
Air traffic control recordings revealed that controllers had warned the helicopter about a Canadair Regional Jet and instructed the pilot to position behind the landing aircraft. These communications will be examined during the investigation.
